About University Of Alabama Million Dollar Band
The Alabama Band became the Million Dollar Band in 1912, when it was initially established as a military band and given the name simply “Alabama Band.” During the initial year of the band’s existence, there were only 14 members, and Dr. Gustav Wittig, who was also a professor of engineering and physics at the university, served as its director.
He commanded the band for a period of five years before stepping down as director; after that, the band was under the direction of the students until 1927, when Captain H. H. Turner assumed the role of director. The tale of how the band got its name is one that has been debated, but the version that has been officially accepted by the university (and which was published in the 1948 football media guide) goes as follows: During the 1922 football season, Alabama traveled to Georgia Tech and was defeated by a score of 33–7.
A local columnist approached Champ Pickens, a famous graduate of the University of Alabama who was in attendance at the game, and asked him, “You don’t have much of a squad; what do you have at Alabama?” In answer, Pickens remarked, “A million dollar band.” The outstanding effort that the small band had put into requesting donations from local merchants in order to accompany the football team to off-campus games was the source of his inspiration for the term, which he came up with as a result of his observation of the situation.
