Mary Gilkerson Obituary, Death – Mary Bentz Gilkerson, 63, recently of Savannah GA, passed peacefully in her sleep Friday, April 15th after a short battle with stage IV breast cancer.
She was born in Columbia SC, May 14th, 1958. Graduated from Flora High School and received both a Bachelors and a Masters of Fine Arts from the University of South Carolina.
Mary enjoyed a long career as both a professional artist and art educator at both the University of South Carolina and Columbia College. She lived her life absolutely to the fullest everyday and chased her passion for art, education, and community activism until the very end.
She is survived by her sisters, Harriet Gilkerson, Julia Gilkerson, her daughter Julia Gilkerson and Granddaughter Lillian Millspaugh. Arrangements to be determined.
