Martin Sayer Death – Ex Tennis star Martin Sayer has passed away suddenly. He was pronounced dead on Wednesday, July 26, 2023. He died at the age of 36 leaving his family friends and loved ones who will forever miss him devastated and heartbroken after hearing of his sudden loss. “Our thoughts and prayers are with the Sayer family and everyone impacted by the devastating loss of one of our own,” director of athletics Whit Babcock expressed. “Martin was a beloved member of our athletics family whose passion for tennis and unwavering commitment to our student-athletes were undeniable. His legacy will live on through the countless lives he impacted, both at Virginia Tech and Radford.”
Martin Sayer Career
Sayer became an assistant coach for the men’s tennis team before to the start of the spring season in 2016, and he remained in that capacity for a total of eight seasons. Sayer’s contributions were critical in the team’s advancement to the NCAA Tournament in 2016, 2018, and 2021 while he was a member of the squad. Sayer aided in the overseeing of Joao Monteiro’s run to the Final Four of the NCAA Singles event in 2016, which is the furthest a Hokie has proceeded in the singles event.
Sayer is a member of the Virginia Tech tennis coaching staff. After that, Mitch Harper, Jason Kros, and Ryan Fishback were the other student-athletes that joined Monteiro in qualifying for the singles round at the NCAA Tournament. During the time that Sayer was at Tech, five different doubles teams were able to earn a spot in the NCAA Tournament.
Sayer served as the head coach of the Radford women’s tennis team for two seasons, commencing in August of 2013, until being hired an assistant coach for the Virginia Tech men’s and women’s tennis teams in January of 2016. Prior to his stint with the Highlanders, he worked as an assistant coach for the women’s tennis team at Virginia Tech and the men’s tennis team at Radford.
