Mark Pilgrim Death – Prominent DJ and Radio Personality Mark Pilgrim who was known for hosting both seasons of Big Brother South Africa, the first season of Big Brother Africa and the MNET game show Power of 10 has sadly passed away. He died on Thursday 9th February 2023 after a courageous battle with cancer at the age of 53. He was a confirmed dead through various publication made on Facebook by loved ones and fans. He will be deeply missed.
Mark Pilgrim Birth and Education
On September 20, 1969, he entered the world. Mark attended both Wits and UNISA after graduating from Sasolburg High School in 1986. After completing his Bachelor of Commerce in Industrial Psychology and Business Economics, he started a career as a consumer researcher that lasted for eight years. At one point in his career, he even led the South African Marketing Research Association as its Johannesburg Chapter Chairman. Having decided to return to school in 2016, he did so and, after 3.5 years, graduated with a Master of Business Administration from Edinburgh Business School (UK).
Mark Pilgrim got his start in the radio industry in the 1980s at the Voice of Wits, the university radio station. He’s been with 5FM since its inception in 1995. In 2003, he left his position at 5fm to join the staff at 94.7 Highveld Stereo in Johannesburg. In October of 2007, Pilgrim hosted a chart program that aired on two radio stations at the same time.
Mark Pilgrim Career
At the end of June 2014, he quit radio, but a few months later, he returned on Johannesburg’s brand-new Hot 91.9FM. After leaving radio for a while, he eventually returned to it full-time and currently hosts a show from 9 a.m. to noon, Monday through Friday. In 2015, he won the MTN Radio Award for Best Weekend Radio Show in South Africa, and in 2019, he won the Liberty Radio Award for Best Daytime Show in South Africa. In 2021, Mark was inducted into the South African Radio Awards Hall of Fame in recognition of his extensive contributions to the radio business.
He was a familiar face across South African television and radio, having presented shows on stations including 5FM, 94.7 Highveld Stereo, 94.5 Kfm, Hot919, and Hot102.7fm, among others. Currently, he continues to work as a radio broadcaster. As a TV host, he has hosted the first and second seasons of Big Brother South Africa, as well as Big Brother Africa and the MNET game show Power of 10.
