Man Killed After Mounting Into Jet Engine At Amsterdam Airport, Police Report: A man was tragically killed on Wednesday when he climbed into a running jet engine at Schiphol Airport in Amsterdam, officials reported. The Dutch military police stated on Thursday that the deceased was an employee of a company operating at the airport. The incident occurred when the jet had just completed the pushback procedure and was preparing to taxi to the runway. The man’s name has not been released, and his death has been ruled a suicide.
KLM Royal Dutch Airlines confirmed in a statement on Wednesday that the incident involved Flight KL1341, which was scheduled to depart for Billund, Denmark. “We are currently taking care of the passengers and employees who witnessed the incident at Schiphol,” the airline said. Schiphol Airport expressed condolences in a social media post written in Dutch, stating, “There was a horrible incident where a person ended up in an airplane engine.” The airport added, “Our thoughts go out to the relatives, and we are caring for the passengers and colleagues who saw this.”
Following the incident, passengers onboard the aircraft were disembarked, and the Dutch military police commenced an investigation. Images shared on social media depicted fire trucks and emergency vehicles stationed beside the plane on the tarmac. The aircraft involved was an Embraer ERJ-190, a twin-engine jet often referred to as the “Cityhopper” due to its use for short flights within Europe. The jet can carry up to 100 passengers.
Incidents of this nature are extremely rare on airport tarmacs, which are typically governed by stringent security protocols. However, this is not the first such occurrence. In January, a man died after climbing into a plane engine at Salt Lake City International Airport. He had accessed the plane by passing through an emergency exit door and succumbed to his injuries despite lifesaving efforts.
