While a student at William Howard Taft High School, where he graduated in 1969, he developed an interest in girl groups as well as gospel-based soul music, forming his own musical group and beginning to write and compose. Luther enrolled in Western Michigan University in Kalamazoo, but withdrew out after only two semesters, determined to pursue his dream of becoming a professional singer, which he achieved and for which he earned a sizable sum of money.

Luther’s first professional engagement was as a backup vocalist for British rock legend David Bowie in 1974. He also composed and sang jingles for corporations like Kentucky Fried Chicken, Mountain Dew, Burger King, and Juicy Fruit. These laid the groundwork for his future prosperity.
