Authorities claim that the Baker man who was handed a life sentence for the murder of LSU basketball star Wayde Sims last week overdosed on opiates on Sunday and died in the East Baton Rouge Parish Prison. Sims was a player for the LSU basketball team.

According to Casey Rayborn Hicks, a spokeswoman for the East Baton Rouge Sheriff’s Office, on Sunday evening, an inmate named Dyteon Simpson, age 23, was discovered unresponsive in a line of other inmates. Hicks claimed that even though the nurses did CPR, Simpson was pronounced dead when they got him to the hospital. According to Hicks, the preliminary findings of the toxicology test suggested that Simpson had a positive test for fentanyl.

She stated that the East Baton Rouge coroner would be conducting an investigation into the matter. After a 2018 street brawl near the campus of Southern University, Simpson was arrested and found guilty of second-degree murder for shooting and killing Sims. A life sentence was ordered by the judge last week.

After their son’s murderer was sentenced to life in prison on Thursday, the parents of LSU basketball player Wayde Sims are ready to shift their attention to continue their son’s legacy. To continue navigating life without Wayde, we have to leave that here,” Wayde’s mother Fay Sims said outside the 19th Judicial District Courthouse after the hearing. Fay and Wayne Sims, both of Baker, sat in the gallery with other supporters as 23-year-old Dyteon Simpson was sentenced by District Judge Will Jorden.

After a 2018 street brawl near the campus of Southern University, Simpson was arrested and found guilty of second-degree murder for shooting and killing Sims. For this offense, Judge Jorden ordered an automatic life sentence.
