According to the Suffolk County Police, Louis Deritis, 53, and Renee Deritis, 50, both of Oakdale, New York, were traveling in a 27-foot 1989 OC/MA boat when it collided with a 44-foot 1989 Henriques Sport Fisherman boat at approximately 10:40 p.m. on Sunday. Louis was operating the vessel at the time of the collision. According to the officials, the ship sank in the Great South Bay somewhere between North Channel and Range Channel, which is located to the north of Ocean Bay Park.
According to the authorities, Louis was thrown overboard, and initially, the rescue crew was unable to locate him. But divers from the Islip Fire Department were able to locate Renee inside the boat’s hull when it was underwater, and they were able to rescue her and bring her onto their vessel. At the scene, a medical examiner pronounced her dead.
According to the Suffolk County police, by the time Monday morning rolled around, the body of her husband had already been found. The operator of the other boat, 61-year-old Ferdinand Caravousanos of West Babylon, and his passengers did not sustain any injuries, according to the police. Both vessels were detained for inspection to ensure their safety. According to the authorities, an investigation into the factors that led to the collision is currently under way.
