Billy relocated to Romford, Essex, England with his family when he was ten years old, despite being born in Trinidad and Tobago. Because his father was a musician, he was exposed to music at a young age and discovered his enthusiasm and skill. Ocean began singing in London clubs to support himself as a youngster, and was soon spotted by his first manager, John Morphew, with whom he produced his first single at Pye Studios in London. Unfortunately, because Billy’s singing style was out of style and no major label would release his singles, no more collaboration was feasible.

After joining a band named “The Shades of Midnight” in 1969, and then recording his first single as Les Charles, “Nashville Rain,” two years later, his condition improved slightly. Billy also fronted “Scorched Earth,” with whom he issued two additional singles in 1974, “On The Run” and “Let’s Put Our Emotions in Motion.” He took his stage name from the Ocean Estate in London, where he was residing at the time, and published his first album, “Ocean Estate,” in 1976. “Love Really Hurts Without You,” his first single, peaked at No. 2 on the UK Singles Chart and No. 22 on the US Billboard Hot 100. His career took off from there, and the songs “Are You Ready” and “Stay The Night” from his following album, “City Limit,” released in 1980, were huge hits. His net worth had grown considerably.

Ocean’s greatest success, however, came in 1984, when he released the album “Suddenly,” which included the hit “Caribbean Queen (No More Love On The Run).” The song was hugely famous over the world, but the title was modified for different regions, thus it’s also known as “African Queen” and “European Queen,” and it won Billy the Grammy Award for Best Male R&B Vocal Performance in 1985.  The album’s title tune hit No. 4 in both the United States and the United Kingdom, and “Loverboy” reached No. 2 in the United States. Ocean’s sixth album, “Love Zone,” was released two years later and had a number of hit singles, including “When The Going Gets Tough, the Tough Get Going,” which became the soundtrack for the film “The Jewel of the Nile” and peaked at No. 1 in the UK and No. 2 in the US. His net worth was steadily increasing.

Billy was nominated for the Brit Award for Best British Male at the 1987 BRIT Awards the following year. His 1988 album “Tear Down These Walls” was certified platinum and had another No. 1 single, “Get Outta My Dreams, Get into My Car.” His latter albums did not achieve the same level of success as his earlier ones, although his “Greatest Hits” collection from 1989 and the 1997 compilation “Love is Forever” were certified platinum and gold, respectively.

Ocean continues to record and perform songs all around the world. His most recent project is an 18-track compilation CD, which was released in April 2010. In the same year, he received the MOBO Lifetime Achievement Award. In his personal life, he presently lives in Berkshire with his wife Judy to whom he has been married since 1978, the couple has three children. Ocean received an honorary doctorate in music from the University of Westminster in 2002 and now serves as a patron for London’s Tech Music Schools.
