Leo Cheverie Death – Leo Cheverie, the long-time Robertson Library staff member and UPEI graduate has sadly passed away. Leo Cheverie, a resident of Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island was announced dead today, Thursday, the 7th of September 2023. He died after a long illness. According to reports, Leo was diagnosed with bowel cancer in the spring of 2022 and has not been taking his treatment lying down. Thoughts and prayers are with his family and community during this difficult time.
Saddened to hear about the passing of Leo Cheverie. Didn’t know him as long as most, but when we first met when I returned to PEI, we connected instantly through mutual friends and our ideologies. I was privileged to watch this amazing human fight for a better society right to the end. A huge loss for our world.
Who was Leo Cheverie?
Leo, an alumnus of UPEI with a Bachelor of Arts degree earned in 1984, had a lengthy tenure as a dedicated member of the Robertson Library staff. Beyond his library role, Leo served as a staff advisor to the UPEI WUSC Local Committee, held the honor of being an Honorary Student Union member, and had previously served as the President of both the PEI Federation of Labour and CUPE 1870.
In recognition of his outstanding contributions, Leo was honored with the prestigious WUSC Alumni Award in 2007. Leo dedicates his time and effort generously to a diverse array of individuals, groups, and endeavors. Whenever injustice rears its head, Leo stands ready to offer both his helping hand and his vocal support. He has been an active champion and advocate for causes like Affordable Housing and Breaking the Silence and has maintained a steadfast commitment to supporting CUPE over the long haul.
In addition to his advocacy work, Leo selflessly volunteers his time at music concerts and festivals, including events like Cloggeroo. He attributes his community-oriented approach to his upbringing within his family, where he witnessed his mother and siblings actively engaging in community activities. Perhaps one of Leo’s most remarkable attributes lies in his ability to foster a sense of community and extend warm invitations to others, bringing them into that shared space of unity and collaboration.
