Love is the second of three children born to former NBA player Stan Love and his wife Karen. He is the nephew of Mike Love and the cousin of Beach Boys members Brian Douglas Wilson, Carl, and Dennis Wilson. He was born and raised in Oregon, where he began playing basketball at a young age, including at Lake Oswego High School, where he was named one of the best players in the country in his senior year.
He then went on to play for the Southern California All-Stars, where he and his team went 45 games without losing, winning him four Most Valuable Player (MVP) honors. Gatorade named him National Male Athlete of the Year. In 2007, he enrolled at the University of California (UCLA), where he played basketball for one season and helped the team reach the Final Four. He was named Player of the Year in the Pac-10 Conference and a consensus First Team All-American.
He left UCLA to join the NBA draft in 2008, where he was selected fifth overall by the Memphis Grizzlies, but was later traded to the Minnesota Timberwolves with the third overall pick on draft night. After that, he participated in the 2008 NBA Summer League, where he was a member of a team that lost 15 of its 19 games. After being left out of the NBA All-Star Weekend Challenge, the team’s performance improved after replacing their head coach, and Love was voted NBA Rookie of the Month for March. Love was named to the 2009 NBA All-Rookie Second Team after finishing ninth in rebounding, first in offensive rebound percentage, and sixth in Rookie of the Year.
He had a career-high 43 points and 17 rebounds while with the Timberwolves, and he played in the 2011 NBA All-Star Game as a replacement for the injured Yao Ming. He also set a record with a 53-game streak of consecutive double-doubles and a 15.2 rebounding average.
After Kevin Garnett was moved to the Boston Celtics, he was awarded NBA Most Improved Player and became the Timberwolves’ new face in the 2010-2011 season. He was named to the All-NBA second team the following season and finished sixth in MVP voting. He became the first player to amass 2,000 points, 900 rebounds, and 100 3-pointers in a single season in the 2013-2014 season. For the second time, he was chosen to the NBA Second Team.
In 2014, he was moved to the Cleveland Cavaliers, who won 34 of their last 43 games and made the playoffs for the first time in Love’s career. He was instrumental in the team’s Game 1 victory over the Boston Celtics, but he was unable to play the rest of the playoffs after dislocating his shoulder in the game. In the 2015-2016 season, he set a season best with 34 points in a win over the Orlando Magic, including 27 points in the first half. His fortune continues to rise.
He was also selected to play for the United States at the 2010 FIBA World Championship and the 2012 Summer Olympics, where the squad won gold medals in both events.
Love also appeared in the TV shows “Entourage” and Disney’s “The Suite Life on Deck,” as well as on the front cover of the computer game National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Basketball 2009. NBA Cares for St. Jude’s Medical Hospital for Children and the Rookie Relief Program are two of his philanthropic endeavors.
