The Georgia Bureau of Investigation launched an investigation after a police officer in Georgia fatally shot the 29-year-old driver of the pickup truck while being dragged by the vehicle. Investigators reported that the motorist, Walter Herman of Ellabell, Georgia, passed away there. The officer, whose identity was not made public, shattered his leg and received medical attention in a nearby hospital.
According to preliminary data, the officer saw a hit-and-run accident Thursday around 7 p.m. off of U.S. 280 close to I-16 in Bryan County while he was at a convenience shop, the bureau stated in a press release. After a brief pursuit, the police halted the truck that had sped away from the scene. Before attempting to handcuff the driver, the officer spoke with him as he approached the driver’s side door, the agency claimed. As the police reached into the vehicle, the driver drove off, dragging the officer for about a tenth of a mile.
After striking a road sign, the automobile left the pavement and descended a steep hill. The officer then discharged his firearm, the bureau claimed, forcing him and the driver to fall from the vehicle. The agency stated that their inquiry is still ongoing. The matter will be submitted to the Atlantic Circuit District Attorney’s Office for evaluation after the inquiry is finished.
The Georgia Bureau of Investigation has been tasked with investigating 36 officer-involved shootings so far this year.
