Kaitlyn Van Essen Obituary, Death : NEBRASKA- Kaitlyn Alice Van Essen of Sioux Center, Iowa, died in a car accident after she was struck by an SUV in Omaha’s Blackstone District. Police said they believe the man who hit her was drunk at the time. His blood-alcohol level was more than twice the legal limit.
Kaitlyn Alice, age 20, went to her Heavenly home on December 4, 2021. Kaitlyn was born on March 22, 2001, in Aberdeen South Dakota, to Todd and Jess Van Essen.
She was the oldest of their three daughters. She was an amazing older sister to Megan and Adelyn, a role that she took very seriously. Kaitlyn graduated from Millard West High School in 2019, and was a student at Capitol Hair School, where she was due to graduate on her 21st birthday. During her time at Capitol, she discovered her love for lash extensions, and had decided to make that her main focus.
Kaitlyn had the privilege of finding her soulmate, and spent the last year and a half in love with Graham Fleener. They were promised to be married. He was the perfect match for her loud, outgoing personality.
Kaitlyn had many special talents, but one specific talent that her family and friends will always remember about her was her ability to nap anywhere, at any time. She will also be remembered for her love of life, passion for all things artistic, and her VERY loud, contagious laugh.
Kaitlyn is survived by her parents Todd and Jessica, sisters Megan and Adelyn, soulmate Graham Fleener, Grandparents Harold and Lavonne Van Essen, Gary and Eloise Sikma, Doreen Casey, Great-grandparents Herbert and Alice Remmerde, five aunts, four uncles, and nine cousins.

Loved ones remembers Van Essen whose death was as a result of an irresponsible drunk driver. Kaitlyn Van Essen who passed in a car accident would have been 21year-old loved ones quoted as they mourn her passing on social media.
Absolutely LOVE being a part of a caring community where paying it forward is such a gift ❤️!! Today we say extra prayers for the family of Kaitlyn Van Essen who would have been celebrating her 21st birthday today! Be sure to show love, share joy and be kind each and every day ❤️! #livelikekaitlyn
I remember Kaitlyn Van Essen and her sisters when they were younger coming every year to stay at Grandpa Harold Van Essen and Grandma LaVonne Van Essen’s home for the week of Carmel Bible School. I got to run the sound system with Uncle Chris Van Essen for many years and I remember the girls often visiting us in the sound booth upstairs. (I think one week Megan was upstairs with us more than she was with her class!)
I love the tradition of grand kids coming to Carmel VBS even if they lived far away and always enjoyed seeing Todd Van Essen & Jess Van Essen’s girls and so many other Carmel grand kids that week!
When I think of Kaitlyn I remember her singing her heart out during music time and waving to Uncle Chris upstairs. Because of these memories we have invited 2 little girls to come to Carmel VBS in honor of Kaitlyn. These two have never experienced a Bible School before and we can’t wait to see them enjoy the week and learn who Jesus is. When we pick them up for the first day and throughout the week we will be sure to share how much Kaitlyn loved Jesus and Bible School! You are in our our thoughts and prayers always Van Essen family. ❤️ #livelikekaitlyn
Thinking of Kaitlyn Van Essen’s family today as it would have been her 21st birthday. In her honor they dropped off “acts of kindness cards” and have blessed many people around Rock Valley today! If you received one please keep it going
