Joseph McCormack Death – On September 29, 1983, a barricaded individual who was armed with a shotgun locked himself inside of a Bronx apartment. The New York Police Department spent four hours trying to reason with the man before he came from the back entrance and began firing his weapon. An explosion tore through the area beneath Police Officer Joseph McCormack’s armpit, which ultimately led to his death. He was a member of Emergency Services Squad 2.

Officers quickly determined that the suspect was armed with a shotgun upon their arrival at the scene. They were attempting to reason with the individual when he stepped out the back door and began firing his weapon. Directly under his armpit, an area of Officer McCormack’s body that was not protected by his vest, the officer suffered a wound that required medical attention. The suspect was killed as other officers opened fire on him in return.
Officer McCormack, who had been with the New York City Police Department for 15 years, recently transferred to the department’s Emergency Service Unit. His wife and three children were left behind when he abandoned them. In 1999, his son submitted his application to the NYPD and was subsequently approved.
