John Nutt Death – The man who passed away in Pemberton Police pursuit has been identified as John Nutt. In a video from police dashboard and body cameras, as well as audio from a 9-1-1 call, were released today by the Attorney General’s Office in connection with a tragic motorcycle accident that happened during a police pursuit in Pemberton on April 20, 2023. John R. Nutt, 41, of Mount Laurel, was the motorcyclist who perished in the accident. Officer Laquan Jett of the Pemberton Township Police Department was the one who initiated the pursuit.
The fatal collision is being investigated by OPIA. The publication of the tapes is in accordance with new regulations instituted by the Attorney General’s Office in 2019 to facilitate an open, honest, and objective inquiry into police shootings. The recordings were previously reviewed in a meeting between investigators and Mr. Nutt’s family. The accident happened on April 20 at around 5:16 p.m. on County Route 687 West, close to where it meets Davis Street in Pemberton.
Police responded to a 9-1-1 call reporting a collision involving a motorcycle and two people who were later identified as Mr. Nutt and his passenger. Officer Jett made an effort to pull over the motorcyclist during that inquiry. The pursuit continued, and the biker eventually crashed into a passing minivan. Mr. Nutt was killed in the accident, and his passenger, whose name is being withheld for their own safety, was gravely hurt. The passenger, who had been in severe condition on the plane, was flown to Cooper University Hospital. Both people in the vehicle refused medical attention.
Deaths that occur during interactions with law enforcement officers operating in their official capacities or while the deceased individual is in custody are subject to inquiry by the Attorney General’s Office, according P.L. 2019, c. 1. All such investigations must be submitted to a grand jury to evaluate whether or not there is sufficient evidence to return an indictment against the officer or officers in question. No further details are being given at this time while the inquiry is still active.
