Temple University wrote on its Facebook page, “It is with deep heartbreak that we write to inform you that Temple University Acting President JoAnne A. Epps suddenly passed away this afternoon. There are no words that can describe the gravity and sadness of this loss. President Epps was a devoted servant and friend who represented the best parts of Temple.”

Who was JoAnne A. Epps?
Ms. Epps, a graduate of Yale Law School, held positions as an assistant US attorney in Philadelphia and deputy city attorney in Los Angeles prior to joining Temple University, as outlined in her biography on the university’s website. In 2008, she assumed the role of dean at Temple Law School and later advanced to the position of executive vice president and provost of Temple University in 2016.
Following the resignation of the university’s first Black president, Jason Wingard, in April, she was appointed as acting president. Ms. Epps was noted for her advocacy for women and minorities within the legal field, as highlighted in her university biography. Additionally, she held leadership positions in organizations such as the American Bar Association, the National Association of Women Lawyers, and the American Law Institute.
