Joan was named to the Order of Canada in 2013 for her contributions to WinSport’s establishment of one of the world’s most distinctive sports venues. Thousands of athletes of all levels and disciplines have a one-stop shop at WinSport to train and stay active.
Joan was especially passionate about women’s hockey, and she fought relentlessly to increase women’s participation in Canada’s national winter sport. Joan was essential in sponsoring the debut of the Calgary Inferno of the Canadian Women’s Hockey League for the 2011–12 season thanks to her commitment to the team. The team’s home games were held at WinSport’s Markin MacPhail Centre’s Joan Snyder Arena, which bears her name.
