Joan Scanlon Death – Joan M. Scanlon, of Primos-Secane, originally from Springfield, Pennsylvania, and a Site Coordinator of the Weed & Seed program for Upper Darby Township passed away peacefully on Wednesday, May 24, 2023, at the age of 72. She was announced dead on Thursday, through a social media publication. “One of the original advocates for domestic violence victims in Delaware County, a true supporter of law enforcement, a grant administrator, and dear friend, Joan Scanlon passed away last night.”
Who was Joan Scanlon?
Joan Scanlon was a Philadelphia native who was raised by the late William and Joan (née Burke) Scanlon. She attended Holy Child Academy before attending Widener University where she earned her bachelor’s and master’s degrees in criminal justice. In addition to being a professor at Neumann University and the founder of the Forward Step organization, Joan served as the Upper Darby Township’s Weed & Seed Program Site Coordinator.
Joan was regarded as a genuine community activist who had a strong love for assisting victims of domestic abuse and rescuing canines from dangerous situations. She loved the summer, Christmas, traveling, and throwing amazing parties. She was a devoted mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt, and sister.
Joan was known for bringing brightness into any room she entered and for having a larger-than-life attitude. Joan was a person that was always about someone else. Living her adult life dedicated to Upper Darby Township. She was an incredible woman who helped so many people. She was a devoted partner to John Webb and a loving mother to Jennifer Green and Chad Gehringe. She was Anthony Scanlon’s and Gerarda Shober’s devoted sister.
Joan Scanlon’s obituary and funeral arrangements
A Funeral Mass was held at 10:30 am on Saturday, June 17th, 2023, at Saint Bernadette of Lourdes Church in Drexel Hill, PA. Friends were welcome as early as 9:30 am. A Celebration of Joan’s Life was held on Saturday, June 17th from 4 pm to 8 pm at Cardington-Stonehurst Fire Hall at 350 Harrison Ave, Upper Darby, PA. In lieu of flowers, please donate to the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence.
