About Joan Elaine Russell

Joan Russell’s birthday is February 25th, and she was born in Tyndall, South Dakota, to parents named Dale O. and Arleen V. (Handel) Russell. She spent her childhood in Scotland, South Dakota, as well as on the Hereford farm that belonged to her grandfather and grandmother, which was located north of town.  Joan relocated to Sioux Falls so that she could have a career in television broadcasting. She began working at KSFY TV as a reporter and later became the anchor of the Eyewitness news broadcasts that aired each weeknight at 6 PM and 10 PM.

In later years, she was given employment opportunities at KELO, KDLT, and SDPB. Joan was a pioneer in the field of journalism for women in Sioux Falls and throughout South Dakota. During the time she spent working for several broadcasting networks, she earned a reputation as one of the most powerful, honest, and hard-working journalists in the industry.

In addition, she was able to expand her flourishing profession while caring for her first-born son as a single parent and, later, while doing the same for her other two children. She was there for her children in all of their endeavors and supported them. Joan has a natural self-assurance that one cannot acquire via instruction, as well as a fondness for music, a sense of loyalty to her country background, and a drive for discovering the lead story.

Joan was continuously conducting research, reading, enhancing her knowledge, and refining her work in both her professional and personal life. She went as far as revising her own birthday card greetings to loved ones and correcting the grammar that her children used in their text messages.
