According to reports, over a dozen law enforcement agencies are investigating the shooting report near the James Madison University campus in Rockingham County, Virginia. All students have been urged to shelter in place at this time as law enforcement agencies investigate the report.
The James Madison University Police Department have urged everyone near the Redpoint James Madison Student Apt area to shelter in place as officers with the Rockingham County Sheriff Office investigate an incident. At approximately 12:39 a.m., Saturday, April 15, 2023, law enforcement agencies continue to investigate in the area area. An email sent to students of the university reads;
There is a heavy police presence in the 2300 block of Newberry Lane in Rockingham County from an incident that occurred off-campus. Those in this vicinity should shelter in place until further notice from the law enforcement agencies. Anyone that is a witness to this event should communicate with the Rockingham County Sheriff’s Office.
James Madison University – In Harrisonburg, Virginia, James Madison institution is a public research institution. Founded in 1908 as the Harrisonburg State Normal and Industrial School for Women, the university was renamed Madison College in 1938 in honor of President James Madison, and subsequently James Madison University in 1977.

A shoplifting investigation in Columbus took a severe turn after police discovered the suspect was a serious violent criminal in possession of a handgun. On Friday, April 14, police were called to a Walmart (735 Whitfield Drive) in Columbus shortly before 3 p.m. for a man suspected of shoplifting. Police said the man, identified as Randall Burton, 40, of Hope, Indiana, was opening packages with a knife and stuffing items, including a pair of headphones, into his pockets.
Burton was described as “uncooperative” by officers, but he was apprehended after a brief battle. Burton was found with a knife and a loaded revolver in his hands, as well as the stolen headphones. Burton has a history of felony convictions, making it illegal for him to own a handgun. He was charged with a major dangerous felon possessing a firearm and resisting law officers.
