Mickey Kross FDNY – Lieutenant Mickey Kross was doing paperwork at the FDNY Engine Company 16 firehouse when his company received the order to dispatch to the World Trade Center. He reported to the North Tower’s 23rd floor. Upon orders to evacuate, he was descending stairwell B when there was a loud roar. The building was falling.
Kross curled his body into a corner of the stairwell. A few hours later, sheltered by the stairway, Kross, 11 other members of the FDNY, a PAPD officer, and one civilian emerged relatively unscathed into a landscape of twisted steel and rubble.
(Jay) Jonas, works for the New York City Fire Department and is currently a Deputy Chief. On September 11, 2001, Jay Jonas was serving as the Captain of Ladder Company 6, which was among the first emergency response units to arrive at the World Trade Center. When the World Trade Center’s north tower collapsed on Jonas and his squad, they were in the process of rescuing a woman who was trapped within.
They were able to survive the collapse as well as their confinement, and they are now alive to relate the incredible story of their bravery and suffering. Following the tragic events of September 11, Chief Jonas was given the honor of representing the New York City Fire Department as the department’s official representative at President Bush’s address to the nation at the United States Capitol Building.
Chief Jonas has spent the entirety of his 35-year career with the Fire Department of New York City working in Chinatown, the Lower East Side of Manhattan, Harlem, and the South Bronx.
Chief Jonas has written rescue protocols for the New York City Fire Department, which were published multiple times in professional magazines, and he is also the author of various articles that have been published in professional journals. In addition, Jonas was featured in an ABC television program that was based on Dennis Smith’s book Report from Ground Zero. Jonas’s appearances on Dateline and The Miracle of Ladder Co. 6 were shown on NBC.
Additionally, he has been included in the films “Miracles in Our Midst,” which was produced by Grizzly Adams Productions and broadcast on a variety of Christian Networks, as well as “The Miracle of Stariway B,” which was broadcast on the History Channel. The Bishop of the New York Diocese of the Episcopal Church has bestowed the Bishop’s Cross upon Jonas, making him the recipient of this prestigious honor. Jonas was honored with the “Men of the Year Award” by The Men’s World Day Organization in Vienna, Austria. Mikhail Gorbachev and Paul McCartney were the ones to bestow the honor upon Jonas.
Chief Jonas has a Bachelor of Science degree in Fire Administration from Empire State College in addition to an Associate of Applied Science degree in Fire Protection Technology from Orange County Community College (SUNY) (SUNY). They have three children and make their home in Goshen, New York, with their spouse.
