RenĂ© Jules Chetelat and Patricia Kerrison Chetelat, Janice’s parents, passed away before her. She was born on August 23, 1956, in Brooklyn, New York, and relocated to Alabama as a young kid with her family. Janice completed her studies at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) after graduating from Woodlawn High School. Over the years, Janice enjoyed organizing get-togethers and reunions for her numerous friends from Woodlawn High School and McElwain Elementary School, with whom she maintained close relationships.
Janice wed Don Wilson, the love of her life, on August 16, 1980. He made their lives full of laughter and gave her everything she could ever ask for. They welcomed Katie and Kristin, their two kids, together. As the strong ladies they grew up to be, Janice was the ideal example of a caring and committed mother. Janice enjoyed volunteering, knitting, reading, and traveling, but most of all, she cherished her time with her family.
Janice was a founding member of Asbury United Methodist Church and a cornerstone in her community. She actively participated in the Church Council, Women’s Bible Study, Loving Hands Knitting Ministry, Faith in Action, and Challengers Class, among other church programs, and was an essential component of the church and its missions. Janice was not limited to the church boundaries in her giving. She worked as a volunteer for many neighborhood organizations, including Meals on Wheels, Grace Klein Ministries, Oak Mountain Missions, and PTOs in schools. Janice took great pleasure in serving others and had a love for lending time and resources. Janice’s true generosity, compassion, and unshakable love will live on in our memories. She was an incredibly selfless woman who prioritized the needs of others over her own.
