Jane Alexander Obituary, Death : Jane Harrison Alexander of Elon died on November 3 at Alamance Regional Medical Center following a brief illness. Jane was preceded in death by her husband of 44 years J. Wesley Alexander. She was born in Denton, NC, the daughter of Howell and Gertrude Harrison, both deceased.
Jane was a graduate of Appalachian State Teachers College (now Appalachian State University) where she met Wes. She was a long-time English teacher at Western Alamance High School. For many years she chaired the English Department and was a director of senior activities. She also taught the first English Advanced Placement course at the school. Jane had fond memories of many students and colleagues.
Jane was a member of Elon Community Church where she had been a member of the Board of Deacons, the Adult Bible Class, and the Women’s Fellowship. She volunteered with Meals on Wheels and was a member of the Retired Teachers Association and Alpha Delta Kappa, an honorary sorority of women educators.
Jane was an avid reader, and she and Wes enjoyed traveling and family camping. Their favorite destinations were Hanging Rock State Park, where they and their daughters camped and hiked many times, Nova Scotia, and the American Southwest.
Survivors include daughters and their husbands Emily and Jim Harrill of Mason, OH and Jane and Justin Scroggs of Cullowhee, NC. She is also survived by grandchildren Jennifer Moore and husband Nick of Greensboro, NC and Chris Harrill of Philadelphia, PA and great grandchildren Wesley and Samantha Moore.
Also surviving are sister Sara Lamar of Tallahassee, FL; brothers and their wives Patrick and Barbara Harrison of Wallburg, NC and John and Becky Harrison of Garner, NC; in-laws Minnie and Hoyt McCachren of Salisbury, NC; and numerous nieces and nephews. A brother, Jim Harrison, preceded her in death.
A private service will be held at Elon Community Church. Others are invited to join the family at the Magnolia Cemetery, Elon, NC on Tuesday, November 9 at 12:15 PM.
