He died on Sunday 24th September 2023 leaving family friends and colleagues devastated. He was confirmed dead through a post that reads “The Bishop’s Gaiters football team and the Bishop’s University Department of Athletics and Recreation is saddened to learn of the passing of former head football coach Ian Breck on Sunday, Sept. 24, 2023”. The exact cause of Ian Breck’s death has not been disclosed.
Ian Breck Career
According to reports from the Gaiters, Ian was an unwavering and devoted coach, adored and esteemed by both his students and peers. His journey with the Bishop’s Gaiters began in 1984 during Bruce Coulter’s tenure as the head. In 1988, he ascended to the position of head coach, ushering in a golden era for the Bishop’s Gaiters football program. Under Ian’s leadership, the Gaiters achieved national recognition for their football prowess.
Over the span of 11 years at the helm, Ian, fondly known as Breck, orchestrated an impressive regular season record of 51 wins, 25 losses, and 2 ties, securing playoff berths on 10 occasions. His coaching acumen guided the Gaiters to five regular season championships and clinched Dunsmore Cup titles in 1988, 1990, and 1994. These triumphant years also saw Bishop’s competing in national bowl games, a testament to Breck’s relentless commitment to excellence.

Breck’s dedication extended beyond the field, evident in his meticulous recruitment efforts and exceptional organization as a position coach. In recognition of his outstanding coaching, Ian was honored with the CIAU Coach of the Year award and proudly brought home the esteemed Frank Tindall Trophy in 1992. Following his tenure at Bishop’s, Ian took on a new role as an educator at Alexander Galt Regional High School, where he played a pivotal role in rejuvenating their football program.

In the year 2000, Ian assumed the prestigious position of Head Coach for Team Canada, guiding a group of U-20 all-stars to victory at the annual NFL Global Junior Football Championship, hosted at the site of the Super Bowl, thereby clinching the World Championship. In 2011, Ian returned to his alma mater, Bishop’s University, as a volunteer assistant coach, continuing to impart his invaluable wisdom to the next generation of football enthusiasts.
