Harry Mowbray Death – After a brief time of illness, former Bolton and Blackpool defender Harry Mowbray passed suddenly in a hospital on Friday morning, July 8, 2022, according to a statement from his first professional club, Cowdenbeath.
Henry Mowbray was born on May 1, 1947, in Hamilton, Scotland. Jimmy Armfield, a former teammate of the Hamilton-born defender, lured him from Blackpool to Burnden Park in 1971. The defender went on to play 31 league games for the squad. Following a trial, he was offered a contract with Cowdenbeath in 1966. A year later, First Division Blackpool signed him for a club-record of £6,000.
He played for four years at Bloomfield Road before moving on to Armfield in Bolton, across Lancashire, in an effort to turn around the Whites’ fortunes following their historic first-ever relegation to the Third Division.
He played frequently in his first season as Armfield began to assemble a team capable of returning to the second tier, but a knee injury kept him out for for the entirety of the 1972 to 1973 campaign, which saw Bolton win the championship. After being let go by Bolton, he transferred to St Mirren before concluding his playing career with a stint in Australia.
Bolton Wanderers Official in a tribute on their official Facebook page wrote ‘We were saddened to learn of the passing of former Wanderers defender, Henry Mowbray.” The team also wrote “He made 40 appearances for the club between 1971 and 1973.” Rest in Peace, Henry.
