Elias Longoria was shot and died on August 15 near the intersection of Calle Batoua and Calle Biehn. Those who were with the teenager at the time told police that they heard a single gunshot and ran off. Court documents indicate that around five seconds later, on the corner of Avenida Del Yaqui and Calle Magdalena, witnesses heard approximately fifteen to twenty fast gunfire and noticed a flashing emanating from a residence close to a tire business. Longoria was fatally wounded during the incident, and paramedics pronounced her dead at the scene.
Later, detectives visited the home from where eyewitnesses reported hearing gunfire. A local informed investigator he was there at the time of the incident and that his friend, a 23-year-old male, was the gunman. According to the witness, he and four others were in the front yard when the 23-year-old started shooting. The eyewitness claimed he snatched the weapon from the dead friend of the shooter. The next step, according to him, was to wrap it in a shirt and set it on a table in the carport.
After obtaining a search warrant, detectives went to the apartment to seek the gun and discovered a 9mm brown pistol in the room where the witness claimed it had been hidden. After tracking him down, deputies from the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office brought the 23-year-old in for interrogation at the Durango Street Jail. The suspect told detectives that he was in his friend’s front yard at the time of the incident. He claimed that he heard bullets from the direction of the roadway, where the victim and his companions had been walking. He claimed to police that he opened fire out of concern for his safety.
The suspect claimed he saw no one in the area but fired his weapon anyhow because he thought rounds had come from that direction. He said he didn’t know where the 9mm went right after the firing, but that it was bronze and black. Police claim the gun recovered from the scene was later confirmed by forensics to be the identical weapon used in Longoria’s murder. The suspect was apprehended on September 20 and charged with second-degree murder after he admitted to using a firearm in a careless manner that resulted in a fatality. The police were unable to ascertain whether or not the suspect fired the first rounds.
