The United States Government, through the Work Project Administration and Work Progress Administration Labor, built Greenwood Elementary School in 1937. (WPA). During the Great Depression, the New Deal sponsored an experiment in the form of the community of Greenwood, which consisted of 83 homes and was designed to allow low-income families to purchase their own homes and land. The Jefferson County School System was responsible for the operation of the first school building, which had classrooms for grades 1 through 9. The addition of six rooms was completed in 1945.

The Greenwood Junior High School opened its doors in 1959 to accommodate students in grades 6 through 9. As a result of the decision made by voters in the surrounding area, the Greenwood hamlet was annexed by the city of Bessemer. At the time, the other, older buildings served as the Greenwood Elementary School for grades 1 through 6. In the fall of 1966, the operation of Greenwood Elementary School was taken over by the Bessemer Board of Education. The Greenwood students in grades 1 through 8 who resided inside the city borders of Bessemer were the only ones the elementary school in Bessemer, Alabama, served beginning with the second semester of the 1970-1971 academic year.

At that time, the bussing of pupils by Jefferson County to the Bessemer Greenwood School was terminated. Transportation was provided for the kids of the Bessemer Greenwood School so that they could attend the Jefferson County Greenwood School. Presently, Greenwood educates children in grades K-5. The village of Greenwood possesses a significant amount of history and tradition. There is a robust sense of community support for the educational institution as well as the pupils. The support of both parents and the community demonstrates this point. This school was attended by the grandparents and parents of a number of the students who are currently enrolled here. In addition, there is currently a member of our staff that attended Greenwood Elementary School when they were younger.

The Southern Association of Colleges and Schools has given Greenwood its highest possible level of accreditation. It is an academically strong school that has met Alabama’s Annual Yearly Progress standards consistently (AYP), according to greenwood.bcse.schoolsites
