What happened to Gino Mader?

On the 15th of June 2023, Gino Mader was competing in the fifth stage of the Tour de Suisse when he crashed in a bend while descending from the highest point of the route, the Albula Pass. A few minutes ago, the American cyclist Magnus Sheffield had collapsed in what was almost exactly the same position as you are. It was discovered that Mader was unconscious and floating face down in the sea. He was brought back to life and then evacuated to a hospital in Chur for further treatment.

During the final descent of the day towards La Punt, which is located in the southeast corner of Switzerland, Mader went off the road and crashed into a ravine. He was discovered floating in the sea unconscious, and medical personnel on the scene performed CPR on him before he was taken to the Chur hospital.

Who was Gino Mader?

The 2016 UEC European Track Championships were Mäder’s last major competition as a track cyclist before he turned professional on the road. Beginning in 2019, he will compete as a professional cyclist with UCI WorldTeam Team Dimension Data. The 2020 Vuelta a Espaa startlist was announced in October, and he was included. On the seventh stage of the 2021 Paris-Nice, Mäder was in a breakaway and came close to winning the stage. However, Primo Rogli outsprinted him in the final 50 meters to take the win. The day’s medal for combativity went to him.

Later that year, in 2021, Mäder participated in the Vuelta a Espaa. He dropped three minutes in the first eight stages, but recovered to place seventh on the mountainous ninth stage to Alto de Velefique. His good performance as Jack Haig’s domestique persisted for the remainder of the race.
