Geraldine Smith Death – A Canadian Press newscaster whose voice became well-known across the country during her nearly 35 years with the national wire service has passed away. Geraldine Smith affectionately known to many as “Geri Smith” was announced dead today. She died at the age of 60. Geri was found dead in her Toronto home on Thursday and was on leave from work at the time of her death. Thoughts and prayers are with her family.
Rose Kingdon, director of broadcast news at the Canadian Press, said Smith’s smooth, friendly, warm delivery of national newscasts made her one of the company’s most senior and best-respected broadcasters. “You always knew without hearing her name who was speaking because Geri had her style when she delivered the news,” Kingdon said in a telephone interview.
Who was Geraldine Smith?
Geri exhibited a high level of thoughtfulness and generosity toward her companions. But she took her job very seriously, and other than that, the only thing that mattered to Geri more than radio was her family, especially her mother and father. And she had a deep love for her cats. Geri had a mind that was as sharp as a whip and a personality that was larger than life despite her diminutive stature. She delighted in sharing tales with her fellow Canadians daily.
Geri enjoyed having a good time. The majority of the time, she was encircled by people laughing. Geri possessed a charming and witty demeanour. The beginning of Geri’s illustrious broadcasting career was in 1983 when she began working at a radio station in Cambridge, Ontario.
After that, she moved on to another station in Kitchener, which was located nearby. In June of 1988, she became a member of the broadcast team at Canadian Press. Geri had tremendous respect for the viewers who tuned in to her newscasts to hear her take on the world because she took the craft of journalism very seriously and cared a great deal about its practitioners.
She was someone that everyone had a great deal of respect for, both for her professional abilities and simply because she was such a pleasant person to work with. She was somebody that everybody had a great deal of respect for. Smith worked as the station’s DJ at CTV News, while Malbon was in charge of broadcasting the news.
