Zeeland Public School senior dies in West Michigan car accident

A senior from Zeeland High School has been identified as the kid who died in a car accident in West Michigan. Gavin Broekhuis, an 18-year-old driver who died in an accident this weekend, was recognized by the Allegan County Sheriff’s Office.

The 18-year-old driver who died Saturday night after smashing his pickup truck into a tree in Allegan County has been identified as a Zeeland Public Schools student.

Gavin Broekhuis, a senior at Zeeland East High School, died in an automobile accident on Saturday, March 12, according to a school district email sent to relatives on Sunday afternoon.

Broekhuis was the driver who died in a single-vehicle collision in Overisel Township this weekend, according to the Allegan County Sheriff’s Office. Around 5:40 p.m. Saturday, deputies responded to the deadly collision. Broekhuis was declared dead at the spot, according to authorities.

According to a press release from the Allegan County Sheriff’s Office, Broekhuis was traveling on 40th Street at 147th Avenue in Overisel Township when he lost control of his pickup truck due to slippery road conditions and off the highway, falling into a tree.

According to the school district, the 18-year-old is survived by his parents, Tim and Gina Broekhuis, and sister, Mya Broekhuis.

Counselors, social workers, and school psychologists will be available to help employees and children throughout the week, according to the district.
