Gail Sloatman was the daughter of John Klein Sloatman Jr., a nuclear weapons researcher for the US Navy, and spent her early years in Hollywood, where she was a friend of Jim Morrison. In 1959, her father was offered a job in London, so the family relocated to England, where Gail attended Marymount International School. Zappa worked as a model for Terence Donovan throughout her adolescent years.
In the mid-1960s, Zappa relocated to New York to study at the Fashion Institute of Technology after her father obtained her a position at the Office of Naval Research and Development. In 1966, she returned to Los Angeles and met producer Kim Fowley, with whom she recorded a duet as “Bunny and Bear” for a single.
Gail dated musician Bobby Jameson and appeared in the documentary “Mondo Hollywood” for a brief time (1966). Pamela Zarubica introduced Gail to Frank Zappa while she was working at the Whisky a Go Go bar. They married in 1967 in New York and had their first child, Moon Zappa, a week later.
Gail sang backup vocals on some of Zappa’s songs and appeared on the sleeve of his record “Absolutely Free” (1967) and the “We’re Only In It For The Money” album in 1968, standing behind him. She also served as his secretary and worked as a mail order and label supervisor.
Gail established the Zappa Family Trust in 2002 to preserve Frank’s published and unreleased material from illegal exploitation after his death in 1993. Gail respected Frank’s request to leave the music profession just before he died. The Zappa Family Trust was taken over by their son Ahmet Zappa in 2015.
In 2008, the Zappa Family Trust launched a lawsuit against the Zappanale Festival organizers in Bad Doberan, Germany. They demanded that the festival’s name be changed and that Frank Zappa’s statue, which has remained in the city center since 2002, be removed.
The case was taken to court, but it was decided in favor of Zappanale. Gail Zappa married Frank Zappa and they had four children: Moon Zappa, Dweezil Zappa, Ahmet Zappa, and Diva Zappa. She battled lung cancer for many years before passing away on October 7, 2015 in Los Angeles.
