Following a brief manhunt that culminated in a lockdown at Gadsden State Community College on Monday morning, February 22, 2016, state troopers have suspended their search for a pursuit suspect in east Gadsden. According to Gary Daniel, the regional public relations officer for ALEA, a trooper pursued a car, and when it came to a stop, the suspect fled on foot. He could not specify where it began or how long it lasted, but it appeared to have come to an end on a shoulder at the George Wallace Drive off-ramp off I-759 in east Gadsden.
Police from Gadsden and state troopers were seen following a Ford Explorer as it was being taken away by a flatbed wrecker. The Gadsden State Community College main campus was close by—in fact, it was visible from the pullover spot. Soon after, just before 8 a.m., college officials issued a “Cardinal Alert” instructing all personnel to take cover. Marked units of the Etowah County Sheriff’s Office, Gadsden police, and state troopers were spotted entering and exiting the school and searching the nearby neighborhoods.
Law enforcement agents were spotted stopping and conversing with Gadsden State security at the front entrance. The Coosa River, a Lowe’s Home Improvement Warehouse, an Academy Sports and Outdoors store, Forest River Apartments, a campground, and Rainbow Drive, which is close to some restaurants, hotels, the Gadsden Mall, and other businesses, are also nearby the immediate area where the chase came to an end.
Gadsden State and the residential areas to the east looked to be the focus of the search, though. A second Cardinal Alert with an “All Clear” was delivered by GSCC about 40 minutes after the initial one. In a later news release, spokesperson Jackie Edmondson stated that at 8:38 a.m., staff and students could return to their regular classes.
Police in Gadsden According to PIO Sgt. John Hallman, Gadsden police were only called in as backup as the suspect in the chase appeared to have fled on foot in the direction of the university. According to Daniel, the manhunt for the culprit is over and no one has managed to catch him.
