Richard was raised in Los Angeles by his parents, Annie Mae and Sonny Ross, and attended Susan Miller Dorsey High School. Ross was illiterate and couldn’t get a college sports scholarship despite attending school and playing tennis. He attended Los Angeles Trade-Technical College in the meantime, trying cocaine for the first time as a teenager and then selling it after spending time with a teacher who was a drug dealer.
Ross then made a connection with Nicaraguan refugees Oscar Danilo Blandón and Norwin Meneses Cantarero, which enabled him to purchase cheaper cocaine and sell it to Los Angeles street gangs, primarily the Bloods and Crips, while immediately investing his money so that his mother was unaware of his business.
Ross decided to expand his firm because it was so successful; he employed more people and built up his empire. He went on to distribute drugs not just in Los Angeles, but also in Texas, New Orleans, Oklahoma, Indiana, North and South Carolina, Seattle, and Baltimore. During the Iran-Contra crisis, Ross was set up by drug kingpin Oscar Danilo Blandón, who was allegedly tied to the CIA at the time. Rick was sentenced to life in prison after being accused with conspiring to unlawfully trade cocaine. Ross was imprisoned in 1996, but his sentence was reduced to 20 years in 2009, and he was released.

His moniker comes from the buildings he held near the Los Angeles Harbor Freeway. Furthermore, Ross was embroiled in a controversy with a rapper named Rick Ross, who was sued in 2011 for appropriating Ross’s name.
