When Adu was eight years old, his family relocated to Rockville, Maryland, where he attended Sequoyah Elementary School. Soon after, a local soccer coach saw him and he began to play football. Adu also went to The Heights School for a while. Freddy had been the youngest American to sign a professional contract in a major league in any team sport by the time he turned 14, having been selected as the number one overall pick in the 2004 MLS SuperDraft by D.C. United. He won the MLS Cup later that year and became the youngest player in US professional sports history when he came on in United’s game against the San Jose Earthquakes in April 2004. He scored his first professional goal just a few days later, becoming the youngest player in MLS history to do so. In 2005, Adu was nominated for FIFPRO Young Player of the Year.
Freddy was traded to Real Salt Lake the next year, along with the team’s goalie. Meanwhile, he captained the U-20 United States men’s national team at the 2007 FIFA U-20 World Cup, putting up a strong showing that led to Benfica, Portugal, acquiring his rights. Benfica signed Adu in July of that year, and he was later loaned to four different teams during his tenure, all of which contributed to his expanding net worth.
Freddy signed with the Philadelphia Union in Major League Soccer in 2011, then two years later he joined the Brazilian Bahia team, from which he was released later that year. Adu had multiple unsuccessful trials throughout Europe after that period, eventually signing with Serbian side FK Jagodina in July 2014, but only featuring once in their first-team. In November of that year, he was let go by the team.
