On evenings when the gym at Atlantic City High School was crowded with students and the Vikings boys basketball team was in the midst of yet another historic triumph, Frank Campo would kneel on the baseline of the court. Due to the fact that everything was in disarray, the athletic director of Atlantic City would always have a walkie talkie in his hand and keep a close eye on every single element of the situation.
On Friday night, Campo passed away due to cancer. He was 76 years old. It was Saturday morning when the news of his passing circulated around the local sports community on Saturday. The Vikings’ assistant coach was not the only thing he did. It was his life’s work. Campo devoted his entire life to contributing to the betterment of not just the kids of Atlantic City but also the entire Cape-Atlantic League.
According to Jay Hurley, an alumnus of Atlantic City High School who ran track for Campo and graduated in 1975, “He was the ultimate mentor.” In 1986, Campo assumed the role of athletic director, and he remained in that position until his retirement in 2014.
