Five workers killed in sewage plant accident in Sicily: An accident that occurred on Monday at a sewage treatment facility near Palermo, which is located on the island of Sicily, resulted in the deaths of five workers. Additionally, one worker was discovered unconscious and transported to the hospital, according to the firefighters.
The workers were reportedly suffering from poisonous gas poisoning, and one member of the crew was able to escape and raise the alarm, as reported by the Italian station RAI. AMAP, the regional organization that is in charge of the treatment of waste water, did not provide any information or commentary.
The deaths are the most recent in a string of fatalities that have occurred in the workplace in Italy. These deaths have sparked indignation within trades unions and were brought to the attention of union officials during May Day rallies that took place last week.
Casteldaccia, which is located twenty kilometers (12 miles) away from Palermo, was the location where rescue personnel arrived. At the time, seven individuals were working at the facility. One worker was discovered to be unscathed, while the fire department was able to remove the bodies of five workers who had died on the job and rescue another worker who was in critical condition.
During an interview on X, Italy’s Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni expressed her support for the relatives of the victims and the worker who is now receiving treatment. She stated that “full light must be shed on this tragedy.”
The disaster took place only a few weeks after an explosion that took place at a hydroelectric power plant near Bologna, which is located in northern Italy. In that explosion, seven workmen were killed while they were performing maintenance.
“We can no longer speak of accidents at work; rather, we must speak of an unacceptable slaughter that calls for a commitment to ensure better safety conditions for workers,” Giorgio Mule, the deputy president of the Italian lower house of parliament, stated on X.
