FALMOUTH, ME~ A head-on collision that occurred on Interstate 295 in the Falmouth region on Monday morning resulted in the deaths of two persons and left one other person in a “critically injured” condition.
According to a news release issued by the Maine State Police, shortly after 10 a.m., officers from the Maine State Police and local first responders were dispatched to a location located just south of Exit 11 on the northbound side of I-295.
According to the findings of the investigation, a Toyota SUV driven by a woman named Nancy Ezhaya, 72, from Yarmouth “entered the interstate traveling south in the northbound lane” and collided head-on with a Honda SUV that was traveling in the northbound direction. Allen Apblett, 61, and his wife, both from Oklahoma, were supposedly the ones driving the Honda SUV, and they were both in the state.
According to the authorities, both Ezhaya and Apblett were found to be deceased upon officers’ arrival at the scene. As a result of the collision, the northbound lanes of Interstate 295 in the Falmouth region were closed for roughly three hours at mile 10. In Falmouth, traffic was rerouted onto Route 1 at Exit 9, where it had been previously redirected. At approximately 1:15 in the afternoon, the highway was made available to motorists again.
Chris Costa, a state trooper from Maine, stated that he observed two vehicles belonging to a funeral parlor at the scene. Because there was such a significant backlog in the traffic moving in the northbound lanes, many people were spotted moving around outside of their vehicles while the traffic was stopped. During the time that first responders are tending to the injured and investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident, the Maine State Police have encouraged cars to avoid the area. There has been no conclusion reached in the investigation into the crash.
