Ernie Cowart Death – Ernest Hugh Cowart, Sr., 57, of Mountain Brook, has sadly passed away. He died on March 4th, 2023. He was born in Lanett, Alabama on November 1, 1965. Ernie received his diploma from Springwood School, his Bachelor of Arts in History from The University of Alabama, and his Master of Arts from the University of Southern Mississippi after completing his education at those institutions. Ernie worked for the Economic Development Partnership of Alabama, which was the focus of his professional life in the field of economic development.
He was involved in the Leadership Birmingham program and Sigma Chi fraternity in addition to being a member of the Independent Presbyterian Church. Ernie was a wonderful person to have as a parent and a friend. He had a wonderful sense of humor and was often the one to start telling funny stories. His family and his friends were the most important people in his life, and he never talked to a complete stranger. He loved going to Alabama football games, as well as spending time at the beach and the farm that his family-owned.

Ernie was preceded in death by his father George R. Cowart. He is survived by his wife, Lydia Ussery Cowart, his children Ernest Hugh Cowart, Jr. (Hugh), Sarah Elizabeth Cowart (Sarah Beth), his mother, Sara Jennie Cowart, his sister, Sally Cowart Clark and spouse Eddie Clark, his brother, George Richard Cowart, Jr. and spouse Karen Cowart, his sister in law Elizabeth ‘Libby” Grubic and spouse Dave, his brother in law Gordon “Bud” Ussery, III and his spouse Mary Ussery. He is also survived by his nieces Elizabeth McElroy and Madeline Trowell and his nephews Nathan Edward Clark, George Richard Cowart, III, Justin Nagle, Tyler Nagle, Gordon Ussery, IV and John Douglas Ussery. Ernie was deeply loved and will be greatly missed.
Ernie Cowart Funeral Arrangement
There will be a visitation at Independent Presbyterian Church located at 3100 Highland Avenue South Birmingham, AL 35205 on Wednesday, March 8, 2023, from 2-3 pm followed by a Celebration of Life Service at 3 pm. In lieu of flowers, please send gifts in memory of Ernie Cowart to The American Heart Association at Heart.org.
