Elton Slater, a former Ragin Cajuns player, died in a car accident on Highway 73

Authorities identified Elton Slater, a 57-year-old former collegiate football player for the University of Louisiana at Lafayette’s Ragin Cajuns, as the victim of a deadly highway crash in Port Arthur on Tuesday, February 15th, 2022.

A car struck the rear of Slater’s Honda while he was driving west on Highway 73, according to police. His Honda was forced into the back of a third vehicle as a result of the collision.

Elton Slater had worked for the city for almost 30 years. Slater was a fantastic person, according to Mayor Thurman Bartie, and he would be missed by many in the Port Arthur community. Slater was a star athlete at Lincoln High School and a great college football player who grew up in Port Arthur.
