Elijah Midgette Death – Three persons were killed in a two-vehicle collision on Monday, June 12th, 2023, that also included six other people; the other three victims are now being treated at local hospitals in Virginia and the Outer Banks. Carolyn Elmore of Bracey, Virginia, and Elijah Midgette of Rodanthe, passed away on Monday while Elizabeth Sadler of Blackridge, Virginia, was pronounced dead on Tuesday.
Cause of Death
According to sources, Midgette was driving a blue Dodge Caravan with no other occupants, and Elmore was operating a burgundy Chevy Suburban with four additional occupants when the Caravan was over the center line and into the Suburban’s lane. The collision happened at an N.C. Highway 12 curves close to the Pea Island Visitors Center. Elmore was proclaimed dead after being taken to The Outer Banks Hospital, while Midgette was pronounced dead right away.
Elizabeth was evacuated to the Sentara Norfolk General Hospital where she was pronounced dead on Tuesday, while two others were taken there by ambulance from Dare County. The Outer Banks Hospital received the fourth passenger. As of Tuesday, one of the four people in the car with Elmore was stable at The Outer Banks Hospital, and the other two were in critical condition at the Norfolk General Hospital.
The Chicamacomico Banks Fire and Rescue, Nags Head Fire Department, National Park Service, U.S. Fish and Wildlife, Dare County Sheriff’s Office, and Dare Emergency Medical Services were just a few of the emergency vehicles and organizations that responded to the tragedy. The accident caused N.C. Highway 12 to briefly close between Rodanthe and the Marc Basnight Bridge. On Monday, the route was shut down at about 11:20 am and reopened around 1:45 pm.

Elijah O’Neal Midgette, born on Sunday, October 19, 1997, was a scholar of English and Religion. More than a writer- an artist of words, a Poet. Lover of Life. A See-er of people and the wonder on earth, recognizing the complexity and purpose of all, which was not confined to the earth. He had solutions and hope that he shared. He was a loving son to his parents and best friends Jonna and Robert Midgette, and a caring brother to Jorah Midgette.
There will be a service to recognize him for who he was on earth, at 3:00 pm on Saturday, June 17, 2023, at Fair Haven United Methodist Church on Tradewinds Road in Rodanthe, NC. Gathering and viewing will begin at 1:00 pm. Burial in the O’Neal family cemetery will immediately follow the service. His family and friends’ hearts extend to the very depths of the others in this tragedy and ask that all donations in his honor go to support those in need.
Carolyn Elmore Obituary and Funeral Arrangement
Carolyn Baird Elmore was born on November 9th, 1955, to her late parents, Grover, and Fannie Baird. She was a loving mother to her daughter, Rhonda Elmore, and her son, Ricky Elmore. She was cherished by her three grandchildren: Austin Elmore, Tanner Elmore, and Aubrey Elmore. She was a loving sister to Maude Tudor, Grover Baird, Jr., and Wesley Baird. Carolyn was a companion to Kenneth Powell.

A funeral service will be conducted on Saturday, June 17, 2023, at 11:00 A.M. in Rehoboth United Methodist Church, La Crosse, with interment to follow in Canaan Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Friday evening from 6:00 until 8:00 at Crowder-Hite-Crews Funeral Home and Crematory. Memorial contributions may be made to the Rehoboth Cemetery Association at 116 Longwood Drive, Bracey, VA 23919.
