Downey Shooting – An off-duty police officer with the Monterey Park Police Department was fatally shot in broad daylight in a public parking lot in Downey, only a few steps away from the entrance to a LA Fitness location, according to the officials. The Downey Police Department responded to a report outside the gym at a major commercial area that is located in the 12000 block of Lakewood Boulevard at approximately 3:45 p.m. on Monday. The portions of the parking lot were being cordoned off for the investigation.
According to investigators, the police officer was seated in his car when he was shot multiple times. The police’s vehicle may be seen on the video surveillance system moving backward for about 25 feet before crashing into a parked van at one point. This may have been an attempt by the cop to flee the gunshots. The officer’s identity has not been made known to the public. However, colleagues of the dead police officer disclosed that he was between 25 years old and had only recently joined the force. It is unknown whether the suspect was aware of the victim’s status as a law enforcement official at this point in the inquiry.
