Ahead of a match that may see Borussia Dortmund end Bayern Munich’s decade-long reign as champions of the German Bundesliga, the club that is currently in first place signed defender Mats Hummels to a contract extension for an additional year on Wednesday.
The 30th of June marked the date that Hummels’ contract with Dortmund was set to expire. The contract for Hummels, who will be 34 years old next year, has been extended through the end of the upcoming campaign. “I didn’t make the choice simple for myself,” the speaker says. “There was a protracted period of deliberation and evaluation,” Hummels stated in a club statement. “At this point in the year, at the conclusion of the season, I can say with confidence that I’m still really up for another year.”
This season, Hummels has appeared in 37 games for Dortmund and has taken over as captain of the team on multiple occasions in lieu of Marco Reus. If Dortmund were to defeat Mainz on Saturday, it would clinch the German championship for the first time since 2012.
PSV coach Van Nistelrooy resigns with one match left in Dutch league:
The Dutch club PSV Eindhoven announced on Wednesday that head coach Ruud van Nistelrooy had resigned from his position with the squad with only one game left to play in the current season because he did not feel he had enough support from the players. The former Manchester United striker had only been in charge for a year when he led his team to victory in the final of the Dutch Cup. On Sunday, PSV will compete in the league match at AZ Alkmaar. If they are able to get a draw there, they will finish in second position behind champion Feyenoord.
Following a discussion with Van Nistelrooy and the board of directors, PSV expressed their desire for him to continue in his role as manager until the conclusion of the current campaign.According to PSV’s statement, “On Wednesday morning, Van Nistelrooy informed the first-team squad and coaching staff that he would be stepping down with immediate effect due to a lack of support within the club,” Van Nistelrooy cited a lack of support from within the organization as the reason for his decision. “Fred Rutten will now take charge of the Arizona game on Sunday after the board of directors requested that he do so.”
If PSV finished in second place, the team would enter the Champions League in the third qualifying round. At that point, the team would need to win two matches against teams from nations that are rated in the middle of the pack in order to advance to the group stage.
