He was born in the year 1936 in the city of Colombo.

Radio Ceylon, which is now known as the Sri Lanka Broadcasting Corporation, was the organization that was responsible for discovering Kelly and a bunch of other musicians. Radio Ceylon provided him with a platform for his songs, and presenters Vernon Corea and Christopher Greet performed his compositions on their music shows. As a result, Radio Ceylon elevated him to the status of a well-known figure, not only in Sri Lanka but also throughout the Indian sub-continent.

His pop single “Dream World” made it onto the charts in both Ceylon and India, respectively. Additionally, he was highlighted in the premier entertainment column of the time, EMCEE, which appeared in the Ceylon Daily News during the 1960s. Pop songs like “Dream World,” “Cha Cha Baby,” and “The Reason Being” made Des Kelly one of the most successful musicians of all time.

In 1962, he relocated to Melbourne, Australia, with his family and began a career in the entertainment industry there. Kelly also became an actor and appeared on television shows such as Homicide, Hunter, and The Flying Doctors for Crawford Productions. In addition, Kelly performed as a solo entertainer on some of the most popular television shows in Australia, including In Melbourne Tonight, the Delo & Daly show, and Reg Lindsay’s Country Hour, which was produced in Adelaide, Australia.

Additionally, he is famous in Australia for a song about traffic safety titled “It’s You.” On a variety of pop tunes, he and fellow Australian artist Robin Foenander have worked together as a collaborative duo. Des Kelly has also released CDs, and on some of them he has included popular songs of calypso and baila music from Sri Lanka.
