Gillian was the National President of the Professional Officers Association in the 1980s before it merged with the CPSU in the 1990s. She wrote in her memoirs how in ’79 she went on her first strike convinced would be leading the proletariat to victory, was alone so a dismal failure, and swore to herself that next time she’d take the whole building with her – which she did “locking out” the then director”
