Death: Margaret Osswald,34, dies in fall at Grand Canyon – After collapsing near a campsite along the Colorado River, a Salt Lake City woman who worked as an assistant director for the Utah Division of Water Quality died at the Grand Canyon on Monday. Margaret Osswald, 34, was recognized by the National Park Service on Tuesday. Osswald, who went by the nickname Meg, was recently appointed as an assistant director, according to the water quality division.

In a statement, the division said, “We are extremely saddened by this loss, and our prayers and support go out to her loved ones at this terrible time.”

According to the park authorities, Oswald fell roughly 20 feet. Someone reported Osswald was unresponsive near the Ledges Camp, a site made up of stair-stepping slabs of ruddy granite at river mile 152, to park officials around 6:30 p.m. Monday.

At roughly 8:30 p.m., the Arizona Department of Public Safety dispatched a chopper to the scene, where a responding crew pronounced Osswald dead. According to a news release, campers attempted CPR before the crew arrived.

The obituary will be officially released by the family
