Death; Judy Mae Hughes, Founding Member of Tearmann Society died on May 3: It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Judy Mae Hughes, who was a founding member of the Tearmann Society, a former chair of the Board of Directors, and a former member of the staff. A death occurred on May 3rd, 2024. A release on social media that read, “Judy passed away peacefully at home” was the source of the news that she had committed suicide. Paul Thorne, her cherished boyfriend and sweetheart of 42 years, is the person she leaves behind. It is currently unknown what caused her death or what circumstances led up to it.
Judy Mae Hughes, who was born on March 3, 1949, achieved success in a wide variety of businesses and pursuits! Crossroads International took her on a journey to Africa and the Kalahari Desert when she was a student at the university. The trip was organized by Crossroads International. Her unwavering dedication to the welfare of women and the progress of communities remained unwavering for the entirety of her life.
Additionally, she was a pioneer in the sector, and she played a big role in the establishment of services for women and children. One example of this is the establishment of the Tearmann House transition house in New Glasgow, which she did in collaboration with Karen O’Hara and Kathy MacKay. Judy was the provincial coordinator for the Transition House Association of Nova Scotia (THANS) in addition to working as the first coordinator for the Nova Scotia Family Violence Prevention Initiative. Also, she was the coordinator for the THANS.
In addition to being a member of the Status of Women’s National Panel on Violence against Women, she also went around Canada in order to take part in the activities that were being conducted by the panel. Judy was never one to conform to an established pattern; rather, she lived her life to the fullest and in accordance with the beat of her own personal drummer. The only people who will remember Judy are her siblings, Jim, Gary, and Brenda, as well as their families. Others will not remember her at all.
Aside from that, her parents, Chris and Jim Hughes, as well as her sister, Aileen (Hughes) Brown, her brother, Owen, and her nephew, Sean, all passed away before to her own passing. A number of people, including her godchildren Jona Lynn Currie, Cait, Laura Jean, and Becca Banks, as well as her extended family, which includes her nieces and nephews, relatives, and devoted friends, have expressed their love and affection for Judy.
