Dr. Bernard Fogel Death

Death: Dr. Bernard Fogel Dies At 85 – Bernard “Bernie” Fogel, M.D., died this week after a 14-year tenure as dean of the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine, during which he supervised a substantial expansion of the school and refocused its mission to highlight community service. He was 85 years old at the time.

According to physician-news.umiamihealth.org, Dr. Fogel began his career as a pediatrician and later served as dean from 1981 to 1995. After retiring and relocating to Bethesda, Maryland, he remained an active advisor, mentor, and fundraiser at the school for another decade. He spent his days there painting, drawing, watching sports, and spending time with his 63-year-old wife and their six grandchildren.

Dr. Fogel passed away on March 30. Dr. John Clarkson, M.D., who succeeded Dr. Fogel as dean and shared an office with him, remarked, “He helped place us on the national stage.” “We became a significant facility for AIDS, diabetes, and cancer research during his tenure.” I’ll miss him because you always felt better after speaking with him when I called him. He had an uncanny ability to make you feel better about yourself and about things.”
