Death; Art Jimmerson, Former ‘UFC 1’ Fighter Passed Away at Age 60: Art Jimmerson, a former boxer and UFC fighter, passed away at the age of 60. Jimmerson’s daughter informed ESPN in a statement that her father passed away on Wednesday. As of right now, the reason of death remains unknown. With a 33–18 record, Jimmerson was a natural boxer, but his passion for “the sweet science” didn’t stop him from taking on a challenge in a different sport.
The first event of the mixed martial arts promotion, known as the UFC, took place in Denver, Colorado in 1993. In an unusual one-night openweight tournament with minimal regulations, “UFC 1” brought together a number of athletes from different backgrounds to determine whose fighting style would prevail in the end. Jimmerson entered the Octagon holding a boxing glove in his left hand and his right hand as free as possible, representing the sport of boxing. It was an intriguing decision that gave rise to his well-known moniker, “One Glove.”
Theoretically, Jimmerson might have used the boxing glove to jab before loading up his right hand for a bare-knuckle punch. However, Royce Gracie, a jiu-jitsu superstar, quickly undid Jimmerson’s MMA strategy by submission, much as he did with all of his opponents to win the ‘UFC 1’ tournament. When it came to “Ultimate Fighting,” Jimmerson was done. He chose to pursue his boxing career as a competitor first, then as a coach, assisting others.
“Art was well-known for his devotion to God, his family, and boxing,” according to a Facebook statement from his son Christian. “Everyone who knew him will sincerely miss him. An announcement will be made regarding Art’s celebration of life funeral. We are appreciative of the love and support that have been shown to us during this trying time. Kindly remember Art and his family in your prayers and thoughts.”
The UFC is expected to release a video package honoring Art Jimmerson, who competed out of St. Louis, Missouri, at this weekend’s Fight Night event in the city.
