Death; 2 miners Has Passed Away, 1 missing and 12 injured at a coal mine in Poland: Two miners have died and one is still missing at the Myslowice-Wesola coal mine in southern Poland, following an early-Tuesday cave-in that injured twelve other miners, according to mining officials on Tuesday. Rajmund Horst, the deputy head of the company that runs the mine, said that at around 3:30 in the morning, 15 miners were working in an area that was 870 meters (2,800 feet) down when the cave-in happened.
He said that two of the miners who were discovered by rescuers and brought to the surface had been declared dead, and that one worker was being taken to the hospital. Eleven other miners, each with a unique injury, had already been dragged to the surface. Nine of them remain in the medical facility. Rescuers were still searching for the missing miner even though they had not heard from him. At the scene were six rescue teams.
The incident happened near the coal face, which is especially susceptible to cave-ins or explosions caused by methane gas since methane gas is present in the rock in many Polish coal mines. The Myslowice-Wesola cave-in this year is the second one; the first one happened on April 17 and resulted in the death of one miner. In Poland, fifteen miners lost their lives in labour accidents in 2023, while two other coal mine workers died in incidents within other mines this year.
