Dawn Staley attended Murrell Dobbins Tech High School in Philadelphia, where her senior year she was named basketball player of the year. Later, from 1988 through 1992, she attended the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, where she was a member of a team that advanced to four NCAA Tournaments, three Final Fours, and one National Championship game.
Staley travelled to Europe after graduating in 1992, where she played basketball in France, Italy, and Spain before returning home to join the Richmond Rage in 1996. Staley was the 9th overall choice by the Charlotte Sting in 1999, and she played for them from 1999 to 2005, leading them to the WNBA Championship game in 2001. After being traded to the Houston Comets in 2005, Staley announced her retirement.
